Q:What was life like for women during the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215 AD?
Date:2008-08-28 10:59:41 By Y! User: Shameless Womens Advocate
A:It would vary enormously depending on their social status, but most people in those days were making a living by farming smallholdings, which involved a lot of work for women. Taking care of the poultry and dairy, preserving food for the winter, cooking, making home remedies for ailments, making their own butter and cheese, and spinning wool and flax into cloth would be among the mos timportant tasks expected of most women. If the women were married to tradesmen, craftsmen or merchants, they woul dmost likely be involve din whatever the family business might be. Some women were in business in their own right. The larger the establishment, the greater the wifes responsibilities. The wife of a knight or nobleman would be responsible for running her husbands esate in his absence, which was a complex business and meant she had to have a good knowledge of estate business. She would also have many servants to manage, and was, as Eileen Power observes in Medieval Women like the owner of a small factory,r esponsible for overseeing the production of all the foodstuffs, drink, and clothing for the people of her household.A few upper-class women became nuns, and might reach a high standard of education in the nunnery. Since the printing press had not yet been invented, a lot of nuns worked at copying books, and produced some beautiful illuminated manuscripts.Children of the nobility were generally sent away to be raised in other noble households. Both boys and girls would learn reading, writing, singing, music, dancing, riding, hawking, and to play chess, draughts, and backgammon. Girls would also learn to sew and the complex business of managing a household. By Y! User: Louise C
