Q:Does a gas cook top work well with a downdraft range? We are considering the purchase of a Jenn-Air downdraft range with a gas cooktop. Weve read that the downdraft actually sucks the flame away from the pot. Is that true? Would that also be true on a cooktop with a rear downdraft exhaust? Any other comments on Jenn-Air downdraft ranges overall?

A:I had this problem at my parents house with their Jenn-air range when they switched from electric to gas. The downdraft range does pull some of the heat away and will not be AS efficient, but you will still be able to cook. If you are a real chef that likes to cook a lot, Id look at my alternative options. If you have a rear downdraft exhaust that sits up higher then the flame, you will not notice nearly as much of a change. When I encountered this at my parents house, because the back exhaust had little effect on the front burners, we were able to put a hood range in that filtered and cycled the air back into the kitchen. It wasnt the ideal solution, but it worked and they have full use of their rear gas down draft cook-top. By Y! User: climbdbq
