Q:Is a downdraft vent on a stove top enough to prevent damage under a 42 cabinet, without a vent hood above? We are building a home and originally, the stove was on the center island with a downdraft. We requested it be moved to the side counter under the cabinets. They were supposed to put up a hood range for ventilation. We have 42 cabinets. Come to find now that its in, they say they dont need the top vent because they will pass code inspection as it is. We are concerned that the smoke/steam of cooking will damage the cabinets above the stove top without a top vent. It only has a downdraft vent built into the stove top.

A:I think that you will be just fine. Assuming that the down draft is built into the cook top, or was originally installed with it, the vent would/should move the required CFMs per the stoves requirements. I am doing a remodel on my kitchen and installing a down draft cook top. My designer is locating the cook top on a peninsula which does also have cabinetry above it, and didnt even become an issue.Hope this helps. By Y! User: Silvio
