Q:Adapting house duct for OTR microwave? Were swapping out a 1985 Spacemaker for a new over the range microwave, and the house duct is about the right size (rectangular) but it was chopped off and jerry-rigged (flared with cuts at corners) to fit the old microwave, which mounted a tad lower than our new one will. Also it is located a fraction of an inch farther from the wall, but the mounting may make up for that.What sort of adapter do we need and how to apply it?

A:Its difficult to answer exactly what youll need. I would measure the dimesions of the rectangular duct at the point where its still intact. Then I would measure the distance between where it is intact and the outlet or adapter on the microwave, as well as the size of that outlet/adapter, and take those to a well-stocked building supply store. There, they should have some ducting or adapters that can be used to mate the two. The offsets arent usually too critical as long as the pipes are hidden behind cabinetry - the connections are sloppy enough that you can just tilt them a few inches either way, and drill a couple of small holes to insert self-threading sheet metal screws into to hold things together. While these pipes dont usually get hot enough to cause a fire, if the vent is also part of a range-hood, they can become quite warm when the stove/oven is being used, so resist the temptation to use only duct tape to hold the pipes together. However, it would be okay to seal the pipes with duct tape, or to tape down the ends of that rectangular duct if you cant, or dont want to bother to trim that part off. By Y! User: HyperDog
